The Mediating Role of Mindfulness in the Relationship of Dysfunctional Automatic Anger Thoughts and Anger Expression
Kim Mi-Hyeon

Lee Dong-Hyung
Abstract
This study investigated the mediating effect of mindfulness on the relationship between dysfunctional automatic anger thoughts and dysfunctional anger expression (i.e., anger-in and anger-out). A total of 254 undergraduate students recruited from a university in a metropolitan city in the southeast of Korea completed the State-Trait Anger Expression Inventory-Korean (STAXI-K), Automatic Anger Thoughts Scale, and Korean version of Five-Facets of Mindfulness Questionnaire (FFMQ). Correlational and multiple regression analyses revealed that mindfulness was negatively correlated to anger-in and dysfunctional automatic anger thoughts, but not with anger-out. Mindfulness partially mediated the relationship between dysfunctional automatic anger thoughts and anger-in. It was also found that three of five mindfulness facets (i.e., "describing", "acting with awareness", and ¡°non-judging of experience¡±) have unique contributions to anger-in. Implications and suggestions for future research were also discussed in the study.
